Densetsu, Wallet Inspector
Last Friday, I played hockey in the morning. When the game was done, I stayed an extra 20 minutes, entertaining the remaining four players by letting them compete in a shootout competition against me. For some reason, I can have a terrible game, but rock in shootouts.
Anyways, I was especially tired after that game. As soon as I got into the dressing room, I tossed my gloves and mask into my bag. I packed up everything else and went home. At home, I unpacked my gear and hung it up to dry.
Once I got to the bottom of my bag, I saw something unusual...a wallet! It belonged to an 18-year-old grade 12 student with a Visa and $70 in cash. I wish I had a Visa and $70 in cash when I was in grade 12...
...but I digress. There wasn't any phone number in it, so I just returned it to the rink. The girls there commented on how honest I was and said that someone reported a missing wallet (and left their phone number).
How did it get in my bag? I have no idea. Maybe the guy it belonged to had a hole in his pants or something. Kind of a boring story, though. My working theory is that it was being stolen when someone walked into the room. Instead of being caught, the thief gave up and dropped it into a bag, lest being caught.
It's not that sensational a theory...there's always tons of stuff stolen from locker rooms. Every few weeks, there's a rash of things going missing. One guy claims his keys were 'borrowed'...everything worth anything was missing from his truck, but there was no sign of a break-in. The keyless entry remote was probably used to identify which truck the keys belonged to.
Personally, I think anyone who leaves their wallet in a locker room unattended is an idiot. If push comes to shove, most rinks nowadays have wallet lockers in highly visible places. I don't even bring my wallet...I only take my license and keep it in my pocket on the ice. I then leave my keys -- sans keyless entry remote -- with the trustworthy girls at the front desk. They now know me as "the honest goalie".
