Computer Building
My work has had several Anitec cases on sale for a while now. The asking price was $50 OBO, and an optional $20 for a power supply. They've been sitting on the floor for about two months, when a friend and I decided to make an offer on them. We each snagged one for $40, including a brand new 550W Anitec power supply and four new case fans.

To go off on a tangent, my current setup is kind of lame. I have an old 800MHz Duron sitting around, running 24/7 downloading random items onto a giant hard drive. I also have my two-year-old Dell laptop, which still runs fine but it starting to show its' age (i.e. I can't play any games from 2005 or later at a reasonable framerate).

I've decided over the next few weeks to save up some money and get a processor, motherboard, and some RAM for this new case. Perhaps even a video card, though I've been out of the game so long (no pun intended) that I have no idea what's been going on in the market for a couple years now.

So, after thinking about it for a whole two or three hours, here's what I'm tenatively purchasing for the core of my system:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ processor ($218)
Asus M2V motherboard ($105)
1GB PC5300 Corsair RAM ($135)

I'm still undecided on whether I should spend another $500 or so and make this system a gaming rig, or spend $600 or so and get an Xbox 360. I know I should probably just get a mid-range video card for $250 or so and go for the game console later on, but...so temping...

What were you planning to buy for $500 to make it into a gaming machine? That seems excessive.

I mean, I'm using an X700 and I've had no trouble with any newer games and that'll cost around $150 at A-Tech (http://www.atechelectronics.com/)

I was thinking of dropping $200 for the Sapphire X850 XT from A-Computers.

But for a little boost, I'd also grab another gig of RAM ($135) and a second hard drive just for game installs ($100). Add on a few other gaming-related things like a high-resolution mouse and rear speakers, and it'll be in the $500 range.

Alright, the stuff in that second paragraph might be excessive, but that's the train of thought I was in when I wrote the post.

One thing for sure: if you're in the market for a media playing box, pick up an original XBox and get a mod chip / 200GB drive. The latest version of XBox Media Center is as close to perfect as it needs to be for me to love it.

If you're getting a computer that powerful, don't bother with a console: do the gaming rig thing instead.

Got any more of those Antec cases left?

Pah, get a mod chip if you want to spend money you don't have to to make your XBox crash without DHCP. Or you could just soft mod it and do all of the same stuff except for the crashing.

Or I could just wait until the modding community finally cracks the 360 and software is written to magically rip games to a HDD...and then get that...instead of buying a last-generation console.

I'll admit it, I totally missed the boat with all that for the PS2/XBox generation of games. All I did was pick up a modchip for the PS2 that allowed you to play *gasp* burnt CD's (but not burnt DVD's).

To be fair, I also bought a modchip that allowed me to play burnt DVD's...but totally trashed the innards of a PS2 trying to solder it in. Hey...I installed four or five modchips for the original PS, so I thought this would be equally easy. Luckily, the insane staff at Future Shop didn't even open the box when I brought the trashed PS2 in and truthfully said "this stopped working...can I get a replacement?"

:P

Ha! That's totally awesome.

Yeah, the bios I have for my mod chip seems to make it impossible to do XBox-XBox transfers. Bummer. I just never feel like I have a reason to upgrade the bios.

I never even tried a PS2 mod chip. I saw the instructions and thought, "fuck that noise".
