The Road Trip That May Never Be
In a thread on the GSBB, there has been mention of a goalie camp. This is different that the usual goalie camp for under-16 or under-18 players -- the vast majority of all hockey camps / schools are designed for this age group, for guys ready to try and make a career out of hockey. This camp, on the other hand, is for old goalies who have recently started playing. The criteria for "old" is "guys that are past their prime, or at least beyond the window of going anywhere with hockey".
This camp is also being held in London, ON.
I toyed with the idea of a road trip to the East last year, but that was shot down because TSA could only take a week of holidays. Driving would have taken nearly 90 hours by itself. I'm going to have around four weeks of holidays this summer...I think I'll take at least two weeks off and make a trip down there.
I also want to visit other places. Montreal and Toronto both rank high on my list, as does Boston, as my sister lives there. And since it's close to London, I wouldn't mind going through Detroit as well for a day or two. Heck, Chicago and New York might be thrown in there as well. I'm looking at at least a 9,000km round trip, plus daily driving around cities. $900 or so in gas, slightly more than plane tickets would be (but cheaper if you include a car rental). Plus, driving is more entertaining...I'd rather drive cross-country and see the countryside than ride in a plane and see...clouds...
A 9,000km trip. With a gigantic hockey bag in my back seat, a backpack full of clothes, a cooler full of food, and my laptop, camera, and cell. Playing hockey in London and quite possibly Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, and New York – the Original Six hockey cities. Hanging my rank-smelling goalie gear up in equally rank-smelling motels to dry. It's almost romantic. It's the essence of one of the largest parts of Canadian culture.
It's quite convenient how all the cities are close to each other...three or four hours and you're somewhere else. Now all I have to do is stop spending money on goalie gear and start saving up...
