Oilers Goaltender Woes
First and foremost, I'll say this: the Oilers lost the game, as a team, before Roloson was hurt. We blew a 3-0 lead and let the 'Canes tie the game 4-4. Carolina had momentum, and their goaltender had some kind of magical trapper that made amazing saves.
Now, Roloson's hurt. He skated off the ice, and there's rumours that he was walking under his own power after the game. But speaking as a goaltender, you need a lot of flexibility in your knees to play half-decently, especially butterfly-style. If your knee is stiff, inflexible, and ready to be hurt again, you're not going to be able to make clutch saves when they're needed.
Marc-Andre Bergeron pushing Andrew Ladd into the net? Terrible play, IMO. Ladd was already coming in towards the crease pretty strong; you don't need to push him into your goaltender and add that extra little oomph. Plus, Roli wasn't giving Ladd anywhere to shoot -- and some people claim that Ladd lost control of the puck anyways.
Still, you don't go and push players into your goaltender. Do you know what 200lbs of torque feels on your knee? I do...it hurts.
Bergeron's excuse? "Rollie was [run] over like that a few times like that in the playoffs and he was always fine. It's just bad luck this time. Obviously, it's something we didn't want to have to deal with" [source]
Nice excuse. We did stupid things before without consequence -- let's keep doing them! Yay!
I still have faith, though. We have the ability to win the cup with Conks or Jussi, though I'd rather Markkanen play. I mean, he's a proven, world-class goaltender. Why was MacT dressing Conklin anyways?
Bah. With the willingness of the entire team to block shots, and the way we clear rebounds, we still have a chance. I'm not sure we'll win it in five (as per my original prediction), but we'll still win it.
